Sustainability challenges are arguably the most important challenges of our time. This is not only about climate, but also about topics like gender equality, zero hunger, quality education, decent work and economic growth, resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation. Engineers should take sustainability into consideration when designing and implementing, but even more importantly they should be aware how they can contribute to sustainability solutions. This presentation will focus on the roles and skills needed by engineers to do so by looking at a practical case study on sustainability roles and skills in the digital sector.

The presentation will consist of:

- An introduction of the sustainability shifts needed for a sustainable society and economy

- An overview of the multi-method approach to study sustainability roles and skills

- Sustainability focused competences (skills, knowledge, and attitude)

- Sustainability focused roles (π-shaped professionals specialised both in engineering and sustainability)

- What are opportunities in organisations and what are interesting research topics?
